Shiatsu UK Academy

Shiatsu UK Academy offers the opportunity from beginners to train to certificated practitioner level, and various other certificated courses, including introductory, refresher, specific ailment etc.. at a sensible price and within a reasonable timeframe.

Founder / Principal Tony Wootton MHAA

Started Shiatsu training with probably one of the worlds leading shiatsu practitioners Janet Thomas, qualified as a Shiatsu Practitioner in UK 1996. Since qualifying has taught and practiced Shiatsu and Martial Arts in UK Hong Kong, Ireland, Sweden, Holland, Germany and the Philippines returning by invitation to teach  Shiatsu, Self Defence and Martial Arts.

Over the years have I been lucky enough to travel to many countries as a student and practitioner and have managed to bring back many new/different approaches to shiatsu. That doesn’t mean that all I have seen and experienced abroad especially in the far-east was good or useful. I was horrified by one practitioner in the Philippines who clearly did not have a clue and was very lucky she did not damage her back. I favour the ‘Toru Namikoshi’ style which I find very suitable for myself as a practitioner, students and patients.

I personally have visited as a patient or should I say victim, to many practitioners of many therapies worldwide and for my money and in my humble opinion shiatsu is way out in front and has a fantastic treatment success record.

As a group our policy is to supply Shiatsu Training Courses and promote Shiatsu in the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia at sensible prices and to a very high standard enabling the student to achieve his/her goal quicker and cheaper than almost all other UK Academies, without short cuts and without the pointless endless waffle that is often included in therapy courses.

I have discovered that many schools/academies are usually too expensive and the courses take to long. Most people can’t afford it and haven’t got the time so what is the point?

People from many different walks of life are now looking for an additional career, a totally new career, or are in an existing therapeutic career wanting to train in Shiatsu to broaden their existing skills.

Money matters a lot to most people as of course it does to myself and my Instructors, however ripping genuine people off (and most people that would enrol would be genuine people) is a disgrace. So if you are a practitioner and charging more than us I hope you can sleep at night. Our Full Practitioner Course will cost you £15 an hour and you will have to pay a yearly membership of £50 that’s it !!!!

Non Residential Certificated Courses

Usually a practitioner’s course takes the same as a three year degree course, be it academic or even a Martial Arts degree.
With Shiatsu UK Academy for example, a full Certificated Practitioners Course takes 24 months, doesn’t take short cuts, supplies all course paperwork free and if you want, helps you to start a practice.
All of our courses at the moment are non residential. However in addition at some point soon, we will consider weekend and full week Residential Courses at a favoured location in the Lake District.

Becoming a Shiatsu Practitioner

Life as a shiatsu practitioner offers independence and flexibility in your working life, the reward of helping others heal, and an endless path of learning more about life and health.

  • You can choose the number of days you want to work, and your hours.
  • You can combine a shiatsu practice with some other profession

Shiatsu practitioners work in a variety of settings.

  • Some practitioners convert a room in their house into a treatment room in which to see clients. This has the convenience of not having to travel to work! You also have the choice of whether to see clients during the day, in the evening or at weekends.
  • Others work from a Natural Health or Complementary Health Centre, or a Leisure or Sports Centre. This has the advantage of being a neutral space away from home, usually with reception to take bookings and payments, as well as the stimulus of working with other complementary therapists.
  • Nowadays with a wider recognition of the benefits of shiatsu, more jobs are opening up with the NHS and private health providers, such as in centres for recovery from drug addiction, for the care of people with HIV and AIDS, and in hospices.
  • Shiatsu has a strong educational component, and many shiatsu practitioners are attracted to teaching. They may run their own introductory shiatsu or exercise classes, work through local Adult Education centres, or teach more in depth in a shiatsu school. Teaching can bring a very different contrast to just seeing individual clients.

How Do You Build A Practice?

  • One advantage of learning shiatsu with Shiatsu UK is that the help, advice and teachings available to students. For example students can begin building a practice during their final year of training. In fact we have had several enterprising students pay for final year course fees by giving shiatsu treatments during this year!
  • There are a variety of ways of building a practice, from developing your communication skills so that you can clearly and positively present the benefits of shiatsu and your work to the public, to creating business cards and publicity materials, and attending health fairs and other events where you can meet the public. In time word of mouth spreads the message of what you have to offer with your shiatsu, and less time has to be spent with specific advertising.
